SPARTAN X will be published initially in digital formats – as an ebook – hopefully within the next month or so. Meanwhile, check out a Special Preview of this contemporary science fiction thriller, which combines my love of SF mystery and intrigue with high-stakes action.
Those familiar with my work know I’m a nut for plotting. I love reading a book where all aspects of the story are intricately interwoven to form a holistic tapestry. When I reach the end of such a novel, I’m left with a feeling of deep satisfaction because the author has spiraled every DNA strand of story into a transcendent finale.
Unfortunately, this sort of dense plotting is given short shrift by many authors. Common rationalizations for an impoverishment of plot are that since life is inherently plotless, books should be too, and that an overemphasis on plot stunts the creative process.
I disagree with both premises. The fact is, richly imagined, non-generic plotting requires an enormous time commitment, probably much longer than many writers locked into book-a-year publishing commitments are willing to spend. For SPARTAN X, LIEGE-KILLER and my other novels, the interlacing of story elements, to the point where I was 100 percent happy with the results, consumes a majority of writing time.
But enough soapboxing. Whatever your ideas about the classic triumvirate underlying most fiction (character + plot + theme) and the ideal balance among them, I hope SPARTAN X proves as engaging to read as it was to write.
